Checklist of Fungi of the Isle of Man 2023
We have helped the Isle of Man Fungus Group with their database of Manx fungi. A new checklist of fungus species has been produced, now available as a PDF which will be downloadable from here shortly. Published by the Isle of Man Fungus Group with a grant from Culture Vannin, this new checklist provides the most taxonomically up-to-date list of the 1,466 fungus species so far recorded.
Grasses, sedges and rushes ID course
Summer 2024 has seen a well attended classroom and field course on the identification of grasses, sedges and rushes, run by Liz Charter. For further information about identification and similar wildlife courses please email enquiries@mwt.im. To support this course three new checklists have been produced from the Recorder6 database. These show the first and last date and the number of years recorded for each species. As we have a restricted number of species on the Island it is useful to see which ones are likely to be found.
Invertebrate Group
This group of dedicated volunteers has regular field meetings and identification sessions. They are greatly expanding our knowledge of invertebrates on the Island. For further information contact enquires@mwt.im
New Butterfly Recorder for the Isle of Man
Phil Waring has taken up the volunteer baton of collating butterfly records for the Island from Gail Jeffcoate who worked tirelessly to make sure Manx Butterflies were well represented on the Butterfly Conservation UK’s Millennium Atlas‘s distribution maps. To ask Phil for advice about recording butterflies he can be contacted via biologicalrecords@gov.im
Changes in 2023
Dr Jennifer Sharp took over the job of managing the biological records in 2023. Dr Philippa Tomlinson has taken a step back but continues to help Jenny in her part-time role.
