What is a species and how are species named?
A species is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. Species are named using the binomial system of Genus and species. So, the Gorse genus Ulex has two species Ulex europaeus and Ulex gallii which are European gorse and Western gorse respectively.
Scientific names are used to ensure universal understanding of identification. The Natural History Museum in London maintains an inventory of recommended species names. Go here to search this list.
